Professor Alice Roberts is a biological anthropologist, author and broadcaster, and returns to the Old Woollen following a sell out show in 2023.

She has presented well over a hundred television programmes, on subjects ranging from biology and archaeology and history. Her television debut came as a human bone expert on Channel 4’s "Time Team", in 2001. After presenting "Coast" on BBC2, she went on to write and present a range of BBC series, including "The Incredible Human Journey", "Origins of Us", "Prehistoric Autopsy" and the long-running archaeology series, "Digging for Britain", as well as several Horizon programmes. She also presents "Britain’s Most Historic Towns" on Channel 4.

Her books include "The Incredible Human Journey", "Evolution: The Human Story", "The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being", "Tamed: Ten species that Changed our World", "Ancestors: The Prehistory of Britain in Seven Burials", "Buried" and "Anatomical Oddities".

For this event Alice will be taking about her new book CRYPT (copies of which will be available to buy). The book looks at how ancient bones hold the key to understanding the impact of violence and disease in medieval society. We come face to face with individuals who lived and died between ten and five centuries ago: the victims of the St Brice’s Day Massacre, the patients at one of the earliest hospitals in England, the archers who went down with the Mary Rose. Weaving together history, archaeology and genetics, Alice Roberts reveals how cutting-edge science is transforming our view of the past.
